Water Treatment System Requirements

Birdland Park & Gardens in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, is home to one of the UK’s largest collections of exotic birds. The park features more than 130 bird species, including England’s only breeding group of King Penguins.

The penguin pool water was supplied from a borehole. However, the water contained high levels of turbidity, which caused the pool to become cloudy very quickly. Turbidity refers to the clarity of water and is commonly caused by particles such as iron, manganese, clay, silt and organic matter.

Because of the poor water clarity, the pool had to be emptied and refilled every few days. This created additional maintenance work for the keepers and increased disruption for the penguins.

The customer therefore required a reliable water treatment system that could improve water clarity and reduce the frequency of water changes.

The Water Treatment Solution

Following water analysis, our Water Treatment Manager, Jason Humphries, specified a suitable filtration solution that could be supplied quickly from stock.

The selected water treatment system used a Turbidex filter to remove fine particles from the borehole water down to 5 microns. In addition, a recirculation loop with two Turbidex filters was installed to ensure the pool water remained continuously filtered.

The result

The completed water treatment system significantly improved the clarity of the penguin pool water. As a result, the water now stays cleaner for much longer, increasing the time between water changes. Visitors can also see the penguins more clearly through the glass viewing panels. Most importantly, the penguins are disturbed less frequently because the pool no longer needs to be emptied and refilled as often.
