The historic Bideford Quayside fountains were first installed in 2002 to mark the Golden Jubilee. However, they had stood silent for 17 years after stopping in 2009. Repairs had previously been considered difficult due to the site’s technical challenges, tidal conditions, and ageing infrastructure. As a result, the fountains remained out of use for many years.

After securing funding through the UK Government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund, Torridge District Council launched a full restoration project. The aim was to bring this well-known public feature back to life. The works also included replacing the outdated pumping equipment. AquaTech Water Services of Holsworthy, Devon, were appointed to deliver the technical restoration.

Requirements

The site required a durable and efficient pumping solution capable of operating reliably in a demanding coastal harbor environment.

With saltwater exposure, fluctuating water levels, and long‑run operational requirements, selecting the correct borehole pumps was critical for system performance and longevity.

AquaTech needed equipment that would:

● Deliver consistent performance
● Withstand harsh coastal conditions
● Integrate with the newly installed intelligent controls
● Support long-term, low maintenance operation.

The Solution

Pedrollo Distribution’s Area Sales Manager, Jason Young, worked closely with AquaTech to specify the appropriate pump systems and provide full technical support.

As a result, Pedrollo Distribution supplied three Panelli 8” stainless steel pumps, selected for their proven reliability and corrosion resistant construction, ideal for demanding marine environments.

Equipment Supplied:

● 3 x 180SX 8” Panelli Stainless Steel Pump
● 2 x 6” 15kw motors
● 1 x 6” 22kw motor

These pumps provided the necessary performance while ensuring durability, efficiency, and ease of service.

The result

Following the restoration, the Bideford Quayside fountains are now fully operational for the first time since 2009, re-establishing a significant visual landmark on the Devon waterfront.

As noted by Torridge District Council:

“No doubt, these fountains will provide a fantastic backdrop to festivals and events in the town, bringing an uplifting and energetic atmosphere to the quay, enhancing this much-loved public space for residents and visitors alike.” The successful completion of the project has revitalised the quay, improved the visitor experience, and restored an important feature of local heritage.
